Safe Routes to Transit

February 2013

Draw a circle around any light rail station or bus rapid ride corridor hub. Where are the carefully delineated safe and healthy streets to support people who choose or need to safely walk or bike to transit?

Federal Transit Administration guidelines encourage safe and pleasant ways to access stations on foot or by bicycle.

Station Area Access guidelines from Sound Transit are currently under review to encourage people to walk or bike to transit. See draft Sound Transit System Access Policy guidelines.

Seattle Neighborhood Greenways recommends

  • Safe streets surrounding stations and transit hubs, including traffic signals prioritized for people who walk and bike.
  • On-street signage and website information encouraging station and hub access by people who walk and bike.
  • Sufficient bicycle parking around Sound Transit and Metro hubs.
